Our Methodist heritage: A springboard for outreach

Our Methodist heritage is more than a record of dates, buildings and important names. It is a story of faith in action—of people who prayed, served, sacrificed and shared the love of Christ with their communities. Remembering this heritage can become more than an exercise in nostalgia; it can be a springboard for reaching people today.

From the days of John Wesley, Methodists have understood that faith must be lived out in the world. Wesley’s emphasis on “holiness of heart and life” reminds us that Christian faith is expressed not only in insular worship, but also in compassionate service, evangelism and engagement with society. Our heritage tells us how previous generations lived out this calling, and challenges us to do the same.

Hebrews 12:1 reminds us that we are “surrounded by so great cloud of witnesses”. Their stories encourage us to persevere in our own journey of faith. When we share the stories of our churches—their beginnings, struggles, ministries and people—we can invite others to discover the God who has been faithful through the years, despite human weaknesses and failures.

Our heritage can also open doors into the community. Historic church buildings, archives, photographs, music and personal stories can provide opportunities for exhibitions, heritage walks, concerts, talks and community events. These can become welcoming spaces where people who might not ordinarily enter a church encounter its story—and perhaps begin asking questions about the faith that shaped it.

Yet heritage must always point forward. Jesus commands us to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). And Psalm 78:4 calls us to “tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.”

As Methodists, may we treasure our heritage not simply by preserving what was, but by allowing the faith of those who came before us to inspire fresh expressions of mission, service and witness—so that future generations may know Christ and experience God’s transforming love.
