Bishop's Message
We have risen!
“Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.” (Colossians 2:12, ESV) At Easter, we celebrate not just the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but ours too. In 1 John 5:12 (ESV), the apostle writes: “Whoever has […]

The virtue of respect
In the month when we celebrate Lunar New Year, we turn our attention to the virtue of respect, as in filial piety, honour and the like. The erosion of this virtue begins when a higher premium is placed on individual rights. There is something appealing about championing your self-interest as a fundamental human right. But […]

Wholly Spiritual
One of the most spiritual things we must do is to take care of our physical body. There is a deception quite widespread even among Christians that spirituality is all about attending to matters of the spirit. We do not have to dig too deep to see that this is a lie. Love, which is […]

The pursuit of hospitality
For a few months this year, the world was caught up in following the tragedy of migrants seeking refuge as they fled the war raging in their own countries. It was heartbreaking to see the photo showing a toddler from one of the fleeing families washed up dead on the beach. The issue is still […]

Keys of the Kingdom
One of the greatest gifts of God to the church and her leaders are the keys of His kingdom. What are keys for? To lock and unlock doors. We lock in what we want to protect and we lock out what we do not want to enter. Looking at the text when these […]

Walking in integrity
Many of us may have seen the TV commercial of a father and his son going to an amusement park. Before entering the merry-go-round, the father paid for tickets for both of them. The man receiving the payment looked at the son, and then told the father that he could have told him that the boy […]

Grace and Truth came
After the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States on same-sex marriage, I read several online comments on the matter. I noticed two extreme positions. On the one hand, standing with the supporters of same-sex marriage, are those who appeal for love, acceptance, inclusiveness and respect for their views. On the […]

The three ‘rights’ that uphold a nation
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34, ESV Doing what is right. Doing it the right way. With the right people. Then we will have a great nation. The Bible has many examples showing this is true, but we have space to consider only one. The greatest human […]

The secret of facing plenty and lack
“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” Philippians 4:12, ESV It seems odd that the apostle Paul should speak about the secret to facing plenty. We know the necessity of facing the challenges […]

Honouring our own
Isn’t it time that we give more air space to local and Asian Christian speakers, pastors, and teachers? Or do we really want to prove that “no prophet is accepted in his hometown”? I t has been 50 years since we became an independent nation. Yet in many ways, we are still dependent on […]

Bishop’s Invitation
The theme for Aldersgate SG 2015 is “Seeking the Welfare of Our City”, based on Jeremiah 29:7. Should we be concerned about our city? The answer appears obvious to most: “Yes, of course.” “This is my home.” “I have my family and friends here.” “Here is where my future lies.” I write this on the […]

Remembering Lee Kuan Yew
It is just slightly over a month since the passing away of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister of Singapore, on 23 March 2015. We still remember him. I have never met LKY (as he is often referred to by many) face to face. Yet what he did in his lifetime influenced me […]

Death’s defeat
While sharing his testimony, a man suffering from terminal cancer pointed out that even though many of us sing this chorus (right) in Sunday School, when the time comes, we show that we do not believe in it. Simply put, we are not willing to die. We are not ready to go to heaven. […]

Denials and Desires
One of the great themes of Lent is self-denial. It is one so contrary to our culture today. Yet it is what brought about the mighty act of salvation in Jesus Christ. This present generation is driven by instant gratification and seeking to pursue one’s passion because “YOLO” (you only live once). After all, what […]
