People often forget that there will be some form of assessment of our lives MANY students get very busy at the end of the year. It is time for important examinations that they are told will determine the course of their lives. These exams are often drenched with the perspiration of anxiety, both of the […]

Yes, but we must fill our pews not with consumers but with disciples of Christ WE LIVE in an age of no-frills airlines, no-frills hotels, and the like. Will we also see the emergence of no-frills churches? That would indeed be a good thing. It would greatly improve the spiritual health and maturity of the […]

RECENTLY I attended a military ceremony that included a video show and a talk wrapped around a Powerpoint presentation. At the end of the ceremony a picture of the state flag was screened while the national anthem was played. The officer on stage turned towards the screen and gave a smart salute. While taking all […]

AN AMERICAN psychiatrist, Karl Menninger, wrote a book in 1973 entitled, “Whatever Happened to Sin?” He observed that modern society had abandoned the word “sin” from its popular vocabulary. Behaviour that once was attributed to human sinfulness was now being seen as nothing more than the result of some physical or psychological illness. As a […]

A YOUNG boy was taught the Lord’s Prayer. His proud parents asked him to recite the prayer when their pastor visited them. He did well except that he inadvertently said, “Hollowed be thy name.” The adults had a good laugh. This mistake caused by childhood innocence and ignorance points us to realities about which we […]

THE ancient world into which Jesus was born was a pretty rough place. Life was short. The average lifespan was 40 years. In the international sphere, Rome was the imperial power that ruled a large part of the known world. And yet decay was setting in. A third of the city’s population were slaves. The […]
