Jesus has overcome the world. We live in a world ravaged by sin, with unavoidable suffering, unexpected occurrences, tragedies and mishaps. “Lord Jesus knows my heart and gives me peace as I go through storms in life..” Jesus told His disciples in the final verse (v33) of John 16: “I have told you these things, so […]

Young girl at sunset praising the Lord The Scripture fulfilled When John Wesley took the significant step of preaching in the open air on April 2, 1739, the text he chose for his sermon was the same text that Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah as he announced his ministry in the synagogue at Nazareth: […]

The Rev Bernard Chao, Pastor-in-Charge of Holland Village Methodist Church, drawing an ash cross on the forehead of a congregant at the combined service. The sign of the cross on the forehead is a reminder of baptism where we are marked as Christ’s. A rough wooden cross stood before the congregation. Members lined up quietly, […]

At Holland Village Methodist Church (HVMC), we’ve decided to focus on becoming a church of disciples who are disciplers. We want to be a mosaic of disciples – a faith community that calls persons of all walks of life to believe and follow Jesus seriously, where loving God and loving others matter. HVMC is almost […]

But if Christian unity is the icing, then Jesus has a sweet tooth. Many of us tend to think of Christian unity like my wife thinks of icing. It’s nice and sweet, and it’s a luxury, therefore not really essential. It might even be detrimental (too much sugar!) to the real work of evangelisation and […]

“Many of us tend to think of Christian Unity as the icing on the cake – it’s nice, it’s sweet, but it is not necessary.” The Rev Dr Gordon Wong gave this apt comparison in his homily during the first service of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, held Jan 21 this year at Trinity […]

Like the migrant workers we minister to, Seletar Tamil Methodist Church (Seletar TMC) has had a history of migration, beginning in the 1920s during the British rule, when many Indian nationals came to Singapore. They started working in areas where the British army was well-established; those working in the Royal Air Force base at Seletar […]

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, felt his heart “strangely warmed” on May 24, 1738, one evening in Aldersgate Street, London. It was then that he knew his faith was no longer just knowing about Jesus Christ, but actually knowing Him. A year later, on April 2, 1739, John Wesley had another experience, when he […]

“Commit myself to 34 weeks of Bible study? No way. You must be joking! I’m too busy and I don’t have the time.” Tell someone about the DISCIPLE Bible Study programme, and often that’s the response we get. Yet, hundreds in Singapore sign up every year, and thousands across the region. The fundamental reason is that […]

Anumber of years ago, when the news broke about casinos being planned for in Singapore, I was repeatedly asked the same question by various people: “Can Christians gamble?” I was shocked that some people who profess to be Christians do gamble. Such people would justify it by saying that it is legal, and so, it […]

It was like “the Wesleyan Institution” for all Methodists. Reading about the rich heritage of the seminary and the many testimonies of my friends, along with encouragement from Bishop Emeritus Dr Robert Solomon, I was convinced to apply to Asbury. “Greetings from Wilmore! Thanks for the opportunity to reflect on my journey here. The past […]
