“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.” Deuteronomy 6:5-6 The Great Commandment is based on Deuteronomy 6 in the context of the family. God uses the home to establish His […]

John, the harbinger, leapt in his mother’s womb, sensing the presence of the nascent Christ:   Such amazing fetal sentience, Spirit-sprung, transcending possibility, confirmed the immaculate conception: giving promise of the unfolding of the divine plan to bring salvation to fallen man.   Luke 1:39-45   Dr Oliver Seet is a member of Wesley Methodist […]

“Soundings” is a series of essays that, like the waves of a sonogram, explore issues in society, culture and the church in light of the Gospel and Christian understanding. In its ‘FAQs on Sexuality’, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) of Singapore seems to base its understanding of human sexuality substantially, although not exclusively, on the […]

“Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” cries the psalmist (Psalm 10:1, NIV 2011). Do these words echo how you are feeling? God does not discourage us from voicing such cries to him; in fact, He inspired it in His Word.   In my previous article (MM […]

Rear view of business man hands busy using cell phone at office desk, young male student texting on phone sitting at wooden table Since its inception about 40 years ago, the Internet has revolutionised our lives in innumerable ways. It has made possible access to a huge amount of information on almost everything under the sun, […]

“The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.” Proverbs 18:8   Gossip is a disease commonly found everywhere, and the church is no exception. In fact, it is a deadly disease that causes much damage in the Body of Christ. Gossip spreads distorted truths, twisted facts, fabricated […]

“Same-sex marriage legalised across US” headlined The Straits Times on 27 June 2015.   My two older Primary school-going children have started to read the newspapers. Minutes later, out popped a question: “So, why is it not okay, Mum?” I was surprised at how the question was worded.   A survey by the Institute of […]

Was it mockery, a diatribe against his timorousness, brought on by Israel’s descent into the maelstrom of despondency, as scavenger tribes plundered the fruit of its labour, powerless to resist their savagery and greed. How effete to beat out wheat secretively in a wine press hidden in a cave!   How could this Angel of […]

In June this year, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in all US states. This means that the 14 states that ban same-sex marriage must now not only recognise same sex marriages that have taken place in other states; they must also grant marriage licences to gay and […]

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 This is more than a book on marriage; it is a book for everyone. Unlike many other books focusing on […]

Today, Christians are expected to remain sexually continent for a longer period of time than any generation that has preceded us. People are not married during the years when hormones are hardest to control.   Christians are taught to abstain from sex till marriage. So courting couples kiss all over but claim virgin status. Some consider […]

In June this year, the much-anticipated encyclical by Pope Francis finally appeared. Unlike papal encyclicals in the past, which were addressed to the Church, Pope Francis’ circular epistle is directed at the whole human family. The reason for this departure is clear: the fundamental concern of this new encyclical has to do with the ecological problem, […]
